Chapter 8

Alex sat in the library, her head resting in her hands. Her red hair was tied up but it was so long it fell over her shoulders like a waterfall. It was warmer in the library than she liked, but it was the only place it was quiet enough for her to concentrate, and there were never enough students around for her to have to hide what she was doing too much.

She had a book open in front of her, and to Mrs. Forbes it looked like she was reading, but the ring on her finger so close to her head was transferring information to her, and she was surveying several rooms in the school.

She was frustrated, but she couldn’t show it. She hadn’t seen Joey or Skelly since after Math, and she was starting to wonder where they were. They hadn’t shown up for English, and Luke was gone now too. She was starting to worry about the consequences if she’d lost them for good. She had tried to keep track of Joey especially, but Skelly too because it was clear he was in on it. She had direct orders that she wasn’t to lose Joey out of her sight. And exactly that had happened.

She leaned back in her chair, arms crossed across her chest, and breathed out slowly. She closed her eyes and tipped her head back.

Suddenly the ring on her finger started vibrating, softly at first, almost unnoticeable, but Alex noticed. After a moment the vibrating became more prominent, and it heated up as well. It didn’t take long before she felt the same vibrating feeling inside of her. She couldn’t sit down anymore, and she got up and walked away from the table, leaving the book behind. The vibrating got more intense, and finally more distinct. Something was wrong, very, very wrong.

She looked over her shoulder at the front desk. Mrs. Forbes was bent over a stack of books. Alex disappeared in between two shelves. They were dusty, unused for some time, and the spines of the books were old and crooked, like they’d stayed over from another life. She kept walking until she hit a dead end. The wall in front of her was plain, with a cat poster trying to give it a bit of life. She looked over her shoulder one more time, and when she saw no one, she disappeared.

Alex’s feet touched down on a badly cobbled street. Buildings rose up on either side, and for a moment she couldn’t breathe. The stench was overpowering. She looked down, and the jeans and plain long-sleeve shirt she was wearing transformed into a long dress. Something the peasants wore.

She was in London, in 1665, she suddenly knew, and she knew the ring was imparting this wisdom to her. Something had happened, something big. The knowledge lodged itself in her chest and she breathed in deeply, focusing. It didn’t take a lot of concentration to find out the ripple in time was bigger than it had ever been.
